Overview
You will gain access to a variety of different kinds of Units: Pirate Crew, Mercenary Crew, Fleet Units, and Armada Units. You can use them to protect your Haven, blockade or raid other Havens, and support your Shipmates in coordinated campaigns. Research Discoveries and construct new Buildings to unlock new, more powerful Units.
Offensive vs. Defensive
A Unit will either be Offensive or Defensive (with the exception of Dark Corsairs which have the same value for both). To see more detailed stats on a Unit's effectiveness against a specific category of opponent, click on its icon before purchasing it. Yellow frame indicates an Offensive Unit, Green frame indicates a Defensive Unit, and Blue frame indicates a Scouting Unit. Defensive Units are at a disadvantage when attacking, but are highly effective at protecting a Haven. Conversely, Offensive Units are heavily weighted towards offensive maneuvers, but have a low defense value.
A good tactic is to develop dedicated forces of either Offensive or Defensive Units tasked with taking or holding Havens, respectively.
Regular vs. Veteran Units
There are two types of every Unit in the game - Regular and Veteran. Regular Units are purchased with Gold, Lumber and Rum. Veteran Units are purchased primarily with Rubies and cost significantly less Resources than Regular Units. Regular and Veteran units are identical in performance and stats.
You may also add Haven Guardians to your Haven's Defense. Guardians are special improvement Items that act as permanent defensive Units stationed within your Haven grounds. These may only be stationed inside your Haven, and may be resurrected or repaired for free after each enemy attack.
In addition to Guardians, you will eventually be able to acquire Dread Fleet Units. These Units receive powerful attributes and bonuses when sent into battle with supporting Units of the same type (Pirate Crew, Mercenary Crew, Fleet Units, or Armada Units).
Unit Statistics
Your Navy is divided into four different branches: Pirates, Mercenaries, Fleet, and Armada. Each branch fields 4 different Units - 2 Offensive and 2 Defensive. Each Unit has his own particular ratio of effectiveness against Offensive or Defensive Units of each branch. Click on the question mark or directly on the image of the Unit to view detailed information about its strengths and weaknesses.
In addition to combat statistics, each Naval Unit has the following characteristics:
- Unit Type: a class that Unit belongs to (Pirate Crew, Mercenary Crew, Fleet Units, and Armada Units);
- Upgrade Level: the Level to which you've upgraded your Unit (max. 20);
- Offense: The amount of damage it will inflict on each category of defending enemy Unit;
- Defense: The amount of damage it will inflict on each category of attacking enemy Unit;
- Cost: the amount of Resources and Rum spent for production;
- Capacity: The amount of Resources Unit can steal on raids;
- Speed: The speed at which this Unit travels on the Map;
- Production time: The amount of time required to produce each Unit.
You can increase each Unit's statistics by:
- Applying Relics;
- Mastering Discoveries;
- Using Pearls at the Witch Doctor's Hut;
- Deploying them with Dread Fleet Units;
Take this into account when planning your navy activity and building your Navy.
Using your Units
All combat Units are produced by specific Naval buildings. Once purchased, you can either use them yourself or they can be sent to Shipmates as Reinforcements.
Reinforcements cannot be used for offense - only for defense.
Research new Discoveries to unlock new types of Units. The higher the level of Discovery, the stronger the Unit will be during an engagement.
Dark Corsairs
The Dark Corsairs are multi-purpose Units. They're equally well-suited for both Offensive and Defensive roles, and (because dead men drink no rum) do not require any Rum for their maintenance. They can also carry a large load of Resources during Raids when compared to regular Pirates.
If a Dark Corsair is cut down, you can summon him back to battle as soon as you have enough Black Spots to hand out to your friends. You can summon up to 3 Dark Corsairs a day. Your Friends use your Black Spots to summon Dark Corsairs for you by clicking on your Haunted Cemetery once a day. One Black Spot is needed for each Dark Corsair summoned. You can maintain up to 50 Dark Corsairs simultaneously.
